We look into if and why there is an evolutionary reason we and animals masturbate: Everything alive is essentially molded around its ability to pass on its genes to the next generation in its current environment. Therefore there would be strong selective pressures to successfully mate and pass on genes. Masturbation does nothing to pass on genes, in fact it seems like a waste of resources to do it (waste of time, energy, semen.. ect). It would be more advantageous to try to mate and pass on genes as much as possible, therefore the act of masturbation would have strong selective pressures against it. So why do so many species masturbate? There are several health benefits in both humans and animals which may be the reason for the act, and there are also several reasons that assist in fertility. A few animals that masturbate are horses, porcupines, turtles, dogs, and birds... But humans masturbate more and we also take a look into why this occurs.
