(3 Sep 2018) LEADIN: Little girls in Mosul are breaking the taboo and going to the swimming pools in the conservative city of Mosul. STORYLINE: These young ladies are making waves in Mosul now that the Islamic State group has been driven out. When the militants took control of the city on 10 June 2014, they prohibited all kinds of sports for females, including swimming. They also forced the little girls to wear the hijab. But after the city was liberated in July 2017, people in general - and girls and women especially - went back to sport, school, work, and other activities. However, swimming for girls remained taboo until very recently, when a school swimming coach started a course in one of the few still-standing swimming pools in the city. Coach Omar Ibrahim began teaching the activity with his own daughter named Rama, and was later joined by relatives and neighbours.
